Norman Bruce Metteer

Norman Bruce Metteer of Phoenix, Arizona passed away May the 1st, 2014 at the age of 89.

Bruce was born January 10, 1925 in Creighton, Nebraska.  Most of his childhood was spent in Tucson, Arizona with his sister Margaret Joan (Fox).  He attended Sam Hughes Elementary School, Mansfield Junior High and Tucson Senior High.  At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Naval Reserves. He had 4 years of service during World War II as an Electronics Technician Mate First Class, until the end of the war.

June 10, 1948 he married Betty Jayne Yount in Tucson. He graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona (1951). They went east to live, in Camden, New Jersey and he worked for RCA as an Electrical Engineer. In 1954 he moved to Phoenix and began his 34 year career working for Motorola until his retirement. Bruce was a member of IEEE; American Legion Post 44, Scottsdale AZ, and Life Member of WW II VFW Post 720, Phoenix AZ and Post 2350 Elko NV.

Bruce is preceded in de
ath by father and mother; Milton J. and Jenny McKinley Metteer; Betty Jayne Metteer, wife of 55 years; and niece Jenny Smith.

Bruce remarried on Nov 10, 2012 and is survived by his loving wife Kathryn Rabey Metteer; sister Joan Fox of Tucson, AZ; daughters Debra Knight (David) of Elko, NV and Donna Metteer of Seattle, WA; stepdaughter Karyn Bates of Ventura, CA; stepson John F. Rabey of Phoenix, AZ, grandchildren Samuel Knight and Hannah Knight, and step grandchildren Avonel Jones of Altadena, CA, and Van Jones of Santa Cruz CA.

Bruce was a long – time member of the Episcopal Church, attending St. Paul’s Church in Phoenix, AZ, Christ Church of the Ascension in Paradise Valley, AZ and St. Paul’s Church in Elko, Nevada. Later he became a member of PVU Methodist Church, Paradise Valley, AZ.

Bruce’s favorite place on all the earth was the cabin at Highland Pines, Prescott, AZ.  He had a great mind, a passion for computers and electrical engineering. He loved classical music and nature. He was a great father to his children, devoted husband to his wives, and involved grandfather to his grandkids.  He loved and cared for his family.  He instilled in his family how to live a full, thoughtful life, which his family will continue to do.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 11, 2014 from 2 – 5 PM at Best Funeral Services, 501 E. Dunlap Ave., Phoenix AZ 85020.

Funeral Service will be on May 12, 2014 at 10:30 AM: PVU Methodist Church Chapel, 4455 E. Lincoln Dr., Paradise Valley, AZ 85253 followed by burial at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85024.

In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Open Table Program of PVU Methodist Church 4455 E. Lincoln Dr., Paradise Valley, AZ 85253; Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014; or the American Cancer Society, 4550 E. Bell Rd., Suite 126, Phoenix, AZ 85032.
